Junior Masqueraders present memorable performance of Waiting for Anya

Waiting for Anya by Michael Morpurgo performed by the Junior Members of the Masqueraders Theatrical Society at St Paul’s Church, Stockingford, Nuneaton, from 5 – 7 November. Directed by Colin Udall.
Review by Abbe Shields.
As always the talented group from Masqueraders Juniors delivered a wonderful production of Waiting for Anya, bringing Michael Morpurgo's moving and powerful story to life with enthusiasm, commitment and real dedication.
Set during the Second World War, Waiting for Anya tells the story of Jo, played wonderfully by Heidi Brazier, a young shepherd boy whose life changes when he discovers that Jewish children are being secretly helped across the border to escape Nazi persecution.
Alongside Benjamin, who is desperate to reunite with his daughter Anya, played by Daisy Brockhouse, Jo becomes involved in a dangerous mission to shelter Jewish children from the Nazis and help them reach safety.
The story also introduces us to the people of the village, whose reactions to the occupation and the unfolding events demonstrate the different ways people respond to fear, danger and injustice. At the heart of the story is the importance of Anya herself, whose absence drives Benjamin's determination and gives the story its emotional focus.

The young cast rose to the challenge of portraying these characters and telling such an important and emotional story. The performances by all the cast demonstrated not only their developing acting abilities but rising in different languages.
There was a real sense of teamwork throughout, with every member of the cast playing their part in creating an engaging and memorable performance. It was clear that a tremendous amount of time, effort and preparation had gone into bringing the production together.
Credit must also go to the creative team and everyone working behind the scenes, whose contribution helped create the atmosphere and bring this poignant wartime story to life on stage.
It is always a pleasure to see young people embracing the opportunity to perform, challenge themselves and develop their talents. Taking on a production with such serious themes is no small achievement, and the cast should be particularly proud of the sensitivity and commitment they brought to it.
A moving and memorable production, and a fantastic achievement by everyone involved. The young cast and creative team should be incredibly proud.
