Calendar Girls bare all at Rugby Theatre

Calendar Girls The Musical at Rugby Theatre from 24-31 October. Directed by Mark Tolchard.
Preview by Rosie Fuller.
“We are going to need considerably bigger buns!” A heartwarming musical about ordinary women doing something extraordinary is up next at Rugby Theatre.
Based on the true story that inspired the hit film, Calendar Girls, The Musical follows members of a Women’s Institute in Yorkshire, who want to raise money for the local hospital when Annie’s husband passes away from leukaemia. Sweeping away all preconceptions of what it means to be in the WI, they decide to print a calendar featuring members posing nude while engaged in traditional WI activities.
“Calendar Girls is a sensitive, emotional and heartwarming story about life, loss, aging, friendship and the power of a community,” says the show’s director Mark Tolchard. “In equal parts funny and moving, at its core is a powerful message about the strength of friendship, the courage to be yourself and the remarkable things that happen when people come together.”
What begins as a modest community fundraising project soon attracts attention far beyond this small Yorkshire village, with unexpected emotional and personal repercussions for each of the women… but the calendar ultimately gives them the confidence to embrace life in unexpected ways.
The show features uplifting musical numbers written by Gary Barlow and Tim Firth, and there’s an extra surprise from Rugby Theatre too.

“Just like the Knapley WI, we have produced our own calendar that will be available to buy at the show. It predominantly features the female cast, but in the spirit of equality, there is also a bonus photo of our dashing male cast too,” continues Mark. “Don’t miss this story of friendship, bravery and a little bit of cheek. But be quick, as tickets are selling fast!”
Calendar Girls runs from 24-31 October, with matinee performances on Sunday 25 October and Saturday 31 October. Tickets are available from the Rugby Theatre box office on 01788 541234, or www.rugbytheatre.co.uk. The show contains brief partial nudity presented in a tasteful manner, and references to illness and bereavement.
