The Rise and Fall of Little Voice by Jim Cartwright, directed by Viki Betts at The Loft Theatre, Leamington Spa, 12 – 22 July 2023. Preview. It is not hard to see why ‘The Rise and Fall of Little Voice’ has been referred to as a ‘northern fairytale’. A classic tale of an individual who transforms despite the realities and expectations of their community. Jim Cartwright mixes the ‘real’ with the extraordinary and the title character in this play is just that.

A shy young woman, Little Voice, leads a quiet and unassuming life, but hides an amazing talent. She seeks companionship and joy from impersonating music’s most iconic singers from the safety and anonymity of her bedroom, whilst her mother Mari prefers the sound of her own voice, indulging in a life of booze, cheap thrills and seedy men.

When Mari starts dating local small time impresario Ray, he forces Little Voice into the spotlight and her transformation astounds everyone. Then the battle between mother and daughter truly erupts.

Funny, brutal, beautiful and sad, Jim Cartwright’s timeless and ultimately uplifting tale is a comic tragedy about finding your voice in a noisy world. Book your tickets: https://lofttheatrecompany.com/
