Jack has a very useful - but fictional - brother called Ernest, as well as a very mischievous - and all too real - friend called Algernon. When Algernon arrives at Jack's country house claiming to be Ernest, only a handbag and a Governess can provide a solution to the ensuing confusion.

In their first production of 2024, Sweet Sorrow Theatre Company are bringing Oscar Wilde's delightfully silly and timeless comedy from 1895 to life at The Bear Pit theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon.

The Importance of Being Earnest was first performed on 14 February 1895 at the St James's Theatre in London, the successful opening night marked the climax of Wilde's career but also heralded his downfall, as it led to his exposure as a homosexual to the Victorian public. Imprisoned after being found guilty of ‘gross indecency’, Wilde's notoriety caused the play to be closed after 86 performances. After his release from prison, he published the play from exile in Paris, but he wrote no more comic or dramatic works.

Director Abi Halden said, “This is a play about lies and the mess that lying might get one into. It’s about what really matters to people… and apparently, to these people, the most important thing in the world is to be called Ernest. It is a play full of mischief, eating other people’s snacks and clever ways to be mean to each other – what more could you ask for?”

The Importance of Being Earnest runs from 20 – 23 March 2024 at 7.30pm nightly plus an additional matinee performance on the Saturday at 2.30pm. Tickets are £15, concessions £12.
