Powerful revival of ‘The Crucible’ next up at Rugby Theatre

A classic Arthur Miller play highlighting the dangers of polarisation and mass hysteria is next up at Rugby Theatre, performed by talented young actors from local youth group In The Round Theatre.

The Crucible is a re-telling of the Salem witch trials of 1692, in the Puritan town of Salem, Massachusetts, where those accused could either make a false confession of witchcraft to survive, or maintain their innocence and be hanged.

“The Crucible feels very right for what’s going on in the world right now,” says Rob Sloan, who is co-directing the show with Darren Pratt. “It speaks to our abandonment of the importance of truth, and to cancel culture. To polarisation – you are either with us, or against – there can be no in between. But at the heart of all of this is a tragic story, beautifully written. Arthur Miller is up there as one of the greatest, most articulate playwrights of the 20th century.”

The play centres on a group of teenage girls who are caught dancing in the woods, which sparks rumours of witchcraft. To avoid punishment, they begin accusing others in the community, leading to widespread hysteria, arrests and trials. Arthur Miller wrote the play in 1953 as a response to Joseph McCarthy’s hunt for communist sympathisers, and it continues to serve as a powerful allegory for political persecution.

Featuring local young actors aged between 10 and 18, this Rugby Theatre production in collaboration with In The Round Theatre is set in the modern day rather than the 1600s, to bring the look and feel more up to date. All music used in the play is original and written by local composer James Grady.

“In the Round Theatre focuses on the craft of acting, and in terms of acting challenges, they really don’t get much bigger than The Crucible,” says Rob. “We wanted to give our young people something to really sink their teeth into, and everyone has risen to the challenge.

“We have the same highly creative production team working on this that worked on our sell-out run of A Christmas Carol at Rugby Theatre in 2024, so our staging will be like nothing you have ever seen,” continues Rob. “It’s full-on drama, and by the end, there shouldn’t be a dry eye in the house.”
