Jesus Christ Super Star at the Abbey Theatre from 15-18 October 2025. Lyrics by Sir Tim Rice, music by Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Performed by Nuneaton Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society.
Review by Margaret Mather.
This rock opera is as fresh today as it was when it first opened in 1971 on Broadway. The story is timeless and tells of the days leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus (played brilliantly by Damon Walsh). His storytelling through song was crisp, clear and utterly compelling.

Judas (played by the extremely talented Tony George) was equally compelling. He had just the right amount of anger and self-justification, backed up by a powerful singing voice for such a serious part. Mary Magdalene (played by Jenny Jennings) shone like a star in her portrayal, with a voice that captivated the audience. Pontius Pilate (played by Kevin Benson) gave a fine performance. His rich melodic voice flowed as he sentenced Jesus to death, egged on by the rest of the crowd. Special mention to Chloe Smith, Shane West, Haydon Lawrence, Jake Hayward and Nathan Harvey. All gave outstanding performances.
The set was simple, and it needed to be to maximise the effect of the overall performance, which was forceful, passionate and commanding. I could see the intensity on the faces of the cast as they gave it their all. The final act of Jesus on the cross was emotional, poignant and executed flawlessly.

I thought the text messages either side of the stage were not needed as they distracted the audience from the story being played out on stage. I understand that it’s about bringing the narrative into the 21st century, but I thought the show stood up as a powerful rock opera without it.
Superb performances by everyone involved. This is a show not to be missed.
