On 20 and 21 Aug, the RSC's young company, Next Generation Act, will perform a brand new take on Shakespeare's commentary on politics, wealth and greed, Timon of Athens.
Next Generation Act is part of the RSC’s Next Generation talent development programme which, now in its eighth year, has given hundreds of young people hands-on experience of working in theatre across its Act, Direct and Backstage strands.
The show has a cast of 21 talented youngsters from all over the country who are joined by a trainee assistant director, a trainee stage manager and trainee wardrobe assistant (all three trainees have come through Next Generation and are stepping into their first paid professional roles on the show).
‘How goes the world? It wears, sir, as it grows.’
Athens is on the brink of collapse: lavish parties for the few and an oppressive senate for the rest. In the centre of it all sits Timon, surrounded by guests who gladly take all they can get. But as Timon’s credit runs out and the city teeters on the brink it all comes crashing down.
When Timon escapes the city and a resistance to the senate rises it’s time to discover what loyalty and friendship really means in a world obsessed with gold and credit.
Next Generation is the RSC’s talent development programme for young theatre makers across England recruited through the RSC Associate Schools Programme.
