Leamington and Warwick Musical Society (LWMS) has had a fabulous time recently bringing modern-era musicals to the Royal Spa Centre, all extremely well received. In March, however, it is returning to a true “classic” and celebrating Lerner & Loewe’s fabulous masterpiece… My Fair Lady.
A double celebration too as it will be 70 years since My Fair Lady premiered on Broadway on 15 March 1956 and 50 years since LWMS performed it at the Royal Spa Centre.
My Fair Lady is the well-loved “rags to riches” tale set in 1912 highlighting the strong distinction between the upper and lower classes of Edwardian Britain. It focuses on Eliza Doolittle, a feisty Cockney flower-seller, turned "lady" by the eccentric, razor-tongued (but somehow infuriatingly charming) phonetics expert, Prof. Henry Higgins.
It has exceptionally witty lyrics…
Higgins: “She is so deliciously low, so horribly dirty!”
Eliza: “I ain’t dirty: I washed my face and hands afore I come, I did.”
Higgins: “I’ll make a duchess of this draggle-tailed guttersnipe.”
A delightful score with every song a show-stopper, including…
With A Little Bit Of Luck, Wouldn’t It Be Loverly? I Could Have Danced All Night, The Rain In Spain, You Did It!
With many colourful characters including…
Alfred P Doolittle, Col. Pickering, Mrs Pearce, Mrs Higgins, Mrs Eynsford-Hill and her lovelorn son, Freddy, Cockneys, Costermongers, Pearlies, plus the Socialites, Aristocrats and the Nobility of Europe!
