James Phelan – The Man Who Was Magic at Warwick Arts Centre, 20 February.

Review by Amanda Burden

Given the world events of the past few years, we’d be forgiven for believing we already live in a world of illusion. The most powerful man in the Western world confidently speaks of “alternative facts,” a contender for UK leadership promises to cancel human rights in one fell swoop, and a former prince once dubbed the world’s most eligible bachelor now faces the prospect of a lengthy prison sentence. Strange times indeed.

It is therefore testament to the skill of illusionist James Phelan that, amid such chaos, he still has the power to amaze.

From the outset, Phelan establishes control of the room with a relaxed confidence that immediately draws the audience in. His style feels less like showbiz and more like a conversation with your sarky best mate who leaves you in stitches.

Audience participation was central to the experience. One young participant was astonished when a coin became personalised almost before his eyes, another was a first-hand witness to a stomach-churning trick involving darning needles and dental floss. Don't worry James, I wasn't using those eyeballs anyway.

Overall, this was a slick and funny performance from a magician who understands both spectacle and precision, delivering bold predictions and memorable reveals.
