John Godber’s play Bouncers about an evening is a seedy northern night club is well known and equally well loved. Four male actors play the eponymous bouncers but take on numerous other parts. The companion piece, co-written with Jane Thornton Shakers: Under New Management is less well known but it is an ideal piece for the Tread the Boards actors at The Attic Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon to turn their skills to.
Set in a busy cocktail bar in London, rather than Godber’s usual northern haunts, three members of staff see the vagaries of human behaviour of a kaleidoscope of characters. Tread the Boards has extra ordinary talent in depth and Andrew Woolley directs three of their most accomplished actors whose CVs of performances at The Attic alone is enough to guarantee that this will be a must-see show.
Abigail Drennan, Cassandra Wilson and Martha Allen-Smith have all recently had large roles in Treasure Island, Two and Hamlet, respectively. Shakers: Under New Management brings them together to deliver fast‑paced comedy with humorous insights into their lives as hostesses working behind the counter and using their excellent acting skills to rapidly take on numerous customers and characters, each with their own hopes and aspirations, and anxieties, that they observe on the other side of the bar. With its blend of wit, social commentary, and whirl of characters, Shakers: Under New Management epitomises the turmoil, humour, and friendship of worker and punters alike.
