Funambulo is a brand-new family play inspired by the magic of the circus. Step into a world of wonder this summer at The Dream Factory, Warwick, as Playbox Theatre’s Young Production Company proudly presents FUNAMBULO — a joyful, energetic, and enchanting new play inspired by the timeless magic of the travelling circus.

 

Created by Izzie James and creatively directed by Emily Quash, FUNAMBULO draws upon the beloved tales of travelling entertainers — circus troupes who once roamed from village to village, setting up their tents like magic overnight. With laughter, mystery, and a sprinkling of mischief, they’d transform everyday locations into spectacular arenas of wonder before vanishing into the night.

 In FUNAMBULO, a troupe of performers, brimming with Commedia dell’arte charm, arrives in a town unlike any other. Things are not quite as they seem… An air of mystery lingers and the town seems cloaked in an unspoken sadness. The circus needs help, and it’s up to the spirit of play, adventure, and imagination to bring happiness back to the town of ‘Stagnatione’.

 

This is a story that captures the thrill of peering out from your window in the dead of night to see the circus lights flicker on the village green. It’s about the excitement of seeing a tightrope walker teeter across the sky, the sparkle of sequins, the beat of the drums, and the secrets waiting just beyond the curtain.

 

The creative Inspiration behind FUNAMBULO is a heartfelt homage to the great circus traditions and childhood stories that have enchanted generations. Izzie James has drawn inspiration from the timeless tales of children’s writers who captured the magic of travelling performers and the adventures they sparked in young imaginations.

Emily Quash, the production’s director, brings her own rich experience to the stage. Having visited legendary circuses around the world — from Roncalli to Cirque du Soleil, Billy Smart’s to intimate local shows — Emily weaves these memories into an enchanting production brimming with colour, life, and spectacle.

 

Together, they create a family-friendly theatrical adventure, lovingly crafted for audiences young and old.

 

Performing this production is Playbox Theatre’s Young Production Company. This vibrant ensemble shines a spotlight on the youngest actors of Playbox Theatre. The young company brings infectious energy, wide-eyed wonder, and boundless creativity to FUNAMBULO, making it the perfect summer experience for families and theatre lovers alike.

 

Funambulo is a story of energy, hope, mischief and family.
