Blithe Spirit by Noel Coward – A Second Thoughts Drama Group Production at The Bear Pit, Stratford-upon-Avon from tonight Wednesday 4 October – Saturday 7 October 2023. Directed by Nic Walsh.


Second Thoughts is getting spooky for their third production of the year as they return to the Bear Pit theatre after its recent transformation with Blithe Spirit by Noël Coward. Written in 1941 at the height of the Blitz, Coward’s comedy with a twist offered escapism from the ongoing war, as well as comfort that lost loved ones were waiting on the ‘Other Side’.


The original production was so popular that it ran for almost 2,000 performances and Second Thoughts is now continuing its legacy by putting on their own production in October 2023, complete with crystal balls and séances galore.

When writer Charles Condomine needs to conduct research for his first novel about the paranormal, he sets up a séance with village psychic Madame Arcati, inviting along the village doctor and his wife. What could possibly go wrong? In this witty and acutely observed comedy, Noël Coward skilfully and wickedly lays bare the realities of Charles’ two marriages to reveal his underlying selfishness. This acutely observed classic can be seen as a laughter-filled condemnation of arrogant behaviour, while also offering a ray of hope as Charles prepares to escape the ruins of his domestic life. With director Nic Walsh at the helm, the cast includes Adam Schumacher, Ruth Jones, Georgina Monk, Christa Gaskell, Chloe Jane Wiltshire, Dorothy Barlow and Bernard Hall.

Blithe Spirit runs from 4-7 October, with performances starting at 7.30 pm and a Saturday matinee at 2.30 pm. Tickets can be booked now at secondthoughts.org.uk/bookings, on 0333 666 3366 (phone calls attract a £2 fee), or on the door from one hour before the performance, for £14 (£12 concession).
