Under the Greenwood Tree by Thomas Hardy adapted and performed by Mark Carey with live music from ARKangel. At Ilmington Village Hall, Shipston-on-Stour on Friday 9 October and Saturday 10 October. Presented by Stratford Theatre Company.

Preview by Charles Essex.

Under the Greenwood Tree was Thomas Hardy’s second novel, published anonymously like his first novel, and the first of his Wessex series of novels.  It follows the trials and tribulations of the village choir, who are being usurped by the vicar deciding to use an organ for worship.

Set against the backdrop of a humorous love story with different suitors vying for the affections of village school mistress Fancy Day, the story explores themes of love, social class and nostalgia for disappearing village traditions.

Talented actor Mark Carey, who performed fabulously in the two person What’s wrong with Benny Hill and solo in Into the Breach, adapted this play from Hardy’s novel and performs the play accompanied by live music from the highly acclaimed ARKangel.
