Opera Fest at Warwick Arts Centre, Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 April 2024, Opera International, Butterworth Hall, Warwick Arts Centre, Coventry

Preview by Ann Cee

Have you ever wondered if you’d enjoy a live opera?  Well now is your time to find out – two of the most accessible operas are being performed over two nights at Warwick Arts Centre.  Bizet’s riotous, baudy Carmen and Puccini’s heartbreakingly romantic Madame Butterfly capture very different approaches to love and relationship with some knock out tunes that you are bound to know (even if you don’t realise it).  Whether you enjoy a melodic chorus or a poignant aria, I’m sure you will be leaving the hall humming the big tunes and hugging your significant other.

If passion and jealously in the streets of Seville appeals to you, take a ticket for the story of Carmen to feel the power of human attachment.  If the more restrained ascetics of Japan and long distance longing are your thing, take a ticket for Madame Butterfly and feel your heart strings tug as the American naval officer follows his own path.

We can expect lovely evocative sets, beautiful sound and sumptuous costumes as these productions whisk us into love stories in foreign lands.

These operas have been produced by award winner Ellen Kent and will be performed by the Ukrainian Opera and Ballet Theatre Kyiv, international soloists and a full orchestra in the exquisite Butterworth Hall.
