Dippy the Dinosaur

If you haven’t said hello to Dippy the Dinosaur yet, then the Easter holidays might be the ideal time to meet a dinosaur from the Jurassic Period. Dippy is a replica of a Diplodocus excavated in the USA in 1899. They originally walked the earth around 155 – 145 million years ago.

The original skeleton is in the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh, but casts were made so the enormity of this prehistoric creature could be shown around the world.

Dippy is 26-metres long and was herbivorous – a plant eater. You can discover more about these species of dinosaur at the Dippy exhibition. He is currently on loan to The Herbert for an initial 3-year period from the Natural History Museum in London.

Admission is free – and you can explore the whole of the museum and art gallery, but it’s best to book a time slot to see Dippy.
