CVFolk presents the first of a new series of events offering a glimpse into the ‘inside story’ of leading acts on the local folk circuit.
Friday 27 June is the date for the ‘Up Close and Acoustic’ show, focusing on the music and influences of Coventry’s much-travelled and admired folk-rock musician, Rob Halligan. Rob will not only perform some of his own songs but also talk about them, and the life events that influenced them, with local musician and folk podcaster Bill Bates.
Bill will be asking questions – and encouraging questions from the audience – to unravel some of Rob’s fascinating journey from troubled teens to headline musician whose personal spiritual strength has proved a powerful influence for many people. With his distinctive contemporary folk style, Rob explores loss, faith, and redemption through moving lyrics, foot-stomping tunes, and a performance that connects deeply with audiences.
The show starts at 7.30pm in the intimate environment of the recently opened Courtyard Studio of Coventry’s Albany Theatre. Promoter and supporter of the local folk music circuit through CVFolk, Pete Willow says, “We’re lucky to have several world-class folk musicians living in or near Coventry and this will be a chance for audiences to get closer to them – not only enjoy their music but also discover more about the experiences that have shaped them as artists.
“Rob’s story is particularly interesting. He has worked with leading folk and rock musicians in the UK and USA and key events of his life – the loss of his father in the 9/11 attack, and Rob’s own involvement in charity work for children putting him in direct contact with the fight against Third World poverty – all this has given him a truly global and human perspective which enriches his writing and his music.”

Pete is delighted that Bill Bates has agreed to be the ‘Michael Parkinson’ of the evening. “Bill is a very popular and well-known musician in his own right and recent years have seen him growing in stature as a podcaster who knows how to inject humour and personality into his conversations.”
More dates for the Up Close and Acoustic format are lined up for the Autumn and Spring with Marion Fleetwood, Kevin Dempsey, Keith Donnelly and Lauren South among the forthcoming guests. Tickets for 27 June are £14.50 or £10.50 concessions (including students and pensioners).
