Birmingham REP nominated for four awards!

The Birmingham Rep is delighted to have received four award nominations in the forthcoming UK Theatre Awards and Asian Media Awards.
The Rep’s recent record-breaking and critically acclaimed production of Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street is nominated for ‘Best Musical Production’ in the UK Theatre Awards. Small Island, a co-production with Leeds Playhouse and Nottingham Playhouse in association with Actors Touring Company, is nominated for ‘Best Play Revival’ in the same awards.
In the Asian Media Awards, A Thousand Splendid Suns, co-produced by Birmingham Rep, Nottingham Playhouse and Leeds Playhouse, and Planet Omar, produced by Leeds Playhouse in association with Birmingham Rep and Unicorn Theatre, are both nominated for ‘Best Stage Production’. A Thousand Splendid Suns will return to The Rep in January 2027 ahead of a UK tour.

Joe Murphy, The Rep’s Artistic Director, who directed Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, said:
“I am thrilled that these four productions have received award nominations. Directing Sweeney Todd was one of the highlights of my professional career, and it’s wonderful that it has been so well received by audiences and critics alike. It’s a show that we made here at The Rep, and I’m very proud of everyone who worked on making it a success.

“I’m also excited that Small Island, A Thousand Splendid Suns and Planet Omar have received nominations – they are well deserved. Working in partnership with other UK theatres meant that we were able to bring these terrific productions, and the important stories they have to tell, to the stage. I’m pleased that A Thousand Splendid Suns will be back at The Rep and on tour in 2027 giving more people chance to see this fantastic show.”
Sweeney Todd The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Sondheim’s darkly comic musical masterpiece ran at The Rep in July and August of this year, with a company led by Ramin Karimloo, Meow Meow and David Bedella. It is The Rep’s most successful musical production ever, garnering over twenty 5 star reviews and taking nearly £1.4 million at the Box Office.
Small Island ran at The Rep in April 2026. A powerful and intimate adaptation of Andrea Levy’s novel, this is a Windrush story of a journey from the sun-drenched shores of Jamaica to the cold, grey streets of 1940s London.

Planet Omar follows the adventures of an 8-year-old British-Pakistani Muslim boy with a wild imagination, a big heart, and a knack for getting into trouble. The production ran at The Rep in June 2026.
Based on Khaled Hosseini’s international best-selling novel, A Thousand Splendid Suns is the powerful tale of three generations of women discovering strength in unity and finding hope in the unlikeliest of places. Set in a war-torn 1992 Afghanistan, it’s an unflinching tale of survival, resilience and strength of human spirit. It ran at The Rep April/May 2025. The play returns to The Rep in January 2027 ahead of a UK tour.
The UK Theatre Awards take place on Monday 12 October, and the Asian Media Awards on Friday 30 October
