What a feeling, what a show at the Belgrade

Anyone who was a ‘bright young thing’ in the early 80’s will remember the iconic dance sequence in the video of Irene Cara’s top 5 hit, ‘Flashdance….What a Feeling’.

This latest production of the musical stars Joanne Clifton in the lead role of Alex Owens and it was apparent very early in the first act that we were witnessing a dancing champion.

Her performances throughout were vibrant and energetic and most definitely worthy of a ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ Champion.

Flashdance tells the story of Alex (a welder by day and ‘flashdancer’ by night) who is chasing her dreams of going to the Shipley Dance Academy and becoming a professional dancer.

It’s an ideal showcase for Joanne as she spins and leaps her way across the stage ably accompanied by an animated and pulsating ensemble of on-stage swing/dancers.

The choreography of the ‘Maniac’ sequence was particularly mesmerizing and the first half ends with a splash.

Ben Adams, former member of boyband A1, stars as handsome Nick Hurley, one of the wealthy heirs of the welding company. In his role as Alex’s love interest he performs several wonderful duets with Joanne with ‘Here and Now’ being particularly memorable.

The enthusiasm of the cast throughout is palpable and the audience were not only all on their feet at the end of the show, but many also seemed reluctant to leave.

Get those leg warmers out and get down to the Belgrade theatre for a sizzling, feel-good performance.
