Belgrade B2, Coventry, preview: Miss Julie
Miss Julie, Belgrade B2, Coventry, July 8-10.
August Strindberg’s 1888 play is moved to 1948 Hong Kong in this adaptation by Amy Ng.
It's Chinese New Year, but the celebrations at the home of the island's British governor descend into a psycho-sexual battle for power between Julie, the governor's daughter, and John, her servant.
This intriguing play is about privilege and servitude; the entitlement of the wealthy and male assertiveness; sexual politics when the seducer is a woman. And, in this version, all against the backdrop of empire.
The play contains some some strong language, violence, and scenes of a sexual nature, and is recommended for over-16s.
