Belgrade Theatre preview: A Monster Calls
A Monster Calls, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, 3-7 March.
Sally Cookson, one of English theatre's most inventive directors, returns to the Belgrade after her highly successful La Strada of some years ago with another stage story that promises to be one of the highlights of the current season.
From Patrick Ness's acclaimed novel about childhood, grief and healing, she's created an Olivier Award-winning play that combines heart-wrenching reality with Grimm-style fairytale, folklore and theatricality.
Conor's mum is sick and not getting any better. His dad isn't around, his grandma keeps interfering and bullies at school are making his life a misery. And then one night he hears a voice telling him about the power of stories that he himself has to tell.
Aimed at audiences aged 10+, the play mixes digital projection, an extraordinary soundscape and exciting physical theatre with raw emotion to chart Conor's struggle to make sense of his world.
