Abbey Theatre Preview: Silas Marner

Silas Marner, Abbey Theatre, Nuneaton, 19-23 November.

George Eliot's most heart-warming story takes to the Nuneatonstage in a brand new format to mark the 200th anniversary of the novelist's birth next week.

Sudden Impulse Theatre Company, based in Nuneaton, have created a new musical out of Silas Marner, the tale of a lonely village outcast who finds redemption by caring for a young orphaned girl who stumbles into his cottage on a harsh winter night.

Backed by an Arts Council England development grant, the new musical is the latest George Eliot work to be turned into theatre by Sudden Impulse, who earlier this year staged a new adaptation of the novelist's Mr Gilfil's Love Story.

Simon Winterman, the company's artisitic director, said, "Eliot was without doubt ahead of her time and deserves to be up there with Jane Austen and the Brontes. I always knew that we wanted to do something very special to mark the occasion and turning one of her best-loved works into a brand new musical will, I hope, make her more accessible and reach a new audience here in her home town."
