Loft Theatre preview: The Theatre of Music Hall
The Theatre Of Music Hall, Loft Theatre, Leamington, Sept 25-Oct 5.
The Good Old Days return to the Loft in more ways than one with this celebration of the world of variety and Music Hall, so faithfully replicated by the fabled BBC TV programme.
While the earliest stars of Music Hall like Harry Lauder and Marie Lloyd have long faded from the memory, many of the 20th century greats who honed their talent in the rough and tumble of variety, like Hattie Jacques, Ken Dodd, Sheila Staefal and Kenneth Williams, are still fondly remembered. And all will have life breathed back into them in what's being billed as an evening of outstanding entertainment.
Sean Glock, well known to Loft audiences as a highly talented actor, has devised and directs this show, taking part in it alongside fellow performers. He was inspired to put together the show by childhood memories of his father's love of the genre and his own admiration for the artistes who came through decades-long apprenticeships in The Halls.
Of his new show, he says, "We hope that the audience will join in, singing along and have a wonderful time as today's talented performers bring the humour and pathos of the Music Halls back to life."
Any members of the audience who feel inspired to dress up will receive a warm welcome, but it is not obligatory, he adds.
