Belgrade preview: Holding the Centre

Holding the Centre, Belgrade B2, September 4-7.

The Belgrade's eagerly-awaited Season of Love and Belonging opens with a powerful first play from writer Joan Carty, bringing to the B2 stage a compelling story of our times.

All his life, Micaiah has been told he's clever, different, special. He's worked hard, made connections and is successful, but when a friend is murdered, the news sends his life spiralling out of control and he's forced to confront the reality of discovering who he really is.

Holding the Centre is very much a work with its roots in Coventry. Although from Birmingham, Joan Carty was an alumnus of the Belgrade's Critical Mass programme. Leading the show as Micaiah is Coventry-born actor Jordan Leigh, while producer Melissa Jordan also hails from the city.

The show is directed by the Belgrade's Leon Phillips with co-production from Women Writes, set up in 2018 to support female playwrights from black and minority ethnic backgrounds.
