The Other Place, Stratford, preview: Crooked Dances

Crooked Dances, The Other Place, Stratford, June 20 - July 13.

An interview in Paris with world-renowned concert pianist Silvia de Zingaro looks like a career-enhancing opportunity for journalist Katy, but the odds are against her.

After a disastrous interview, it looks as though she's blown it - until a mysterious night-time encounter with the pianist gives her another chance at the scoop she's desperate for.

Crooked Dances is the first Royal Shakespeare Company commission for Robin French, a bright new talent on the writing scene. He wrote the hit sitcom Cuckoo for BBC3, and is writer in residence at The Birmingham Rep.

Also making their RSC debuts at The Studio Theatre at The Other Place are Ruth Lass as the pianist Silvia de Zingaro, and Jeany Spark as journalist Katy Porlock. Experienced Stratford hand Ben Onwukwe returns to the RSC to play Zingaro's manager Denis Zann.

Director Elizabeth Freestone said: "Robin creates a funny, vivid and spell-binding atmosphere as the extraordinary story of Silvia's life unfolds. Nothing you are told is quite as straightforward as it seems, and nothing you see is quite what you expect. It's a fantastic challenge to realise the images and ideas that he is exploring - the power of music, the nature of time, the fragility of real human connection."
