The Belgrade Theatre is calling on the good folk of Coventry to play a part in helping to raise the last chunk of funding required to kick start ambitious redevelopment plans, designed to prepare it for the city's City of Culture year.
The theatre needs £600,000 to reach a £4.8 million funding target for its three-phase 2020 redevelopment project and has launched the biggest public funding appeal in its history.
The Play Your Part initiative aims to offer a range of options, from simple donations to sponsored events and activities, and includes a whole host of special opportunities to get more closely involved in the future of the theatre. A monthly lottery is just one of the plans being drawn up.
The first long-awaited phase of the redevelopment will refurbish the foyers and main stage auditorium of the 1958 building. The second will link up the ground floor cafe and first floor Burbidge Room to create a flexible eating and entertaining space, while the third phase turns the nearby former Jaguar pub into a multi-functional creative talent hub, complete with accommodation that can be rented out to create income.
Helen Hotchkiss, the theatre's Head of Development, said: "With Coventry's year as UK City of Culture less than two years away, the 61-year-old theatre is in need of some refurbishment in order to be a sparkling gem for 2021 and beyond.
"Our redevelopment project will offer audiences a more enjoyable experience and provide more flexible and innovative spaces for the communities we serve. However, as a registered charity, we're reliant on the kind support of audiences, members, funders, corporate partners and donors, so this year we're calling on everyone to play their part and support our 2020 Redevelopment Project."
