Wise words from the man from down under

Captain Krankypants, The Albany Theatre, Coventry, until March 16.

Captain Krankypants was a name given by the children of Australian army veteran and successful businessman Trace Dann during a period when their Dad was struggling with mental health issues.

Dann gives a presentation on his battle with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and depression. With the imaginative use of slides, anecdotes and video clips he gives a personal account of his feelings and problems as well as the strategies he employs to overcome them. He emphasises the need to control the mind before it starts to control you and he provides practical tips on how this can be best achieved. Probably the most significant advice he gives is that you should, indeed, seek advice. This, he admits, is one of the most difficult things he has ever had to do. This is particularly poignant as so many men have difficulty talking about their feelings and perceive that admitting you have a problem to be a sign of weakness. The presentation does not provide statistics or definitions but certainly gives a close insight into the nature of both PTSD and depression. It definitely appeared to resonate with members of the audience judging from their response in the Q&A session at the end of the presentation. This presentation will not only be relevant to those that are suffering with similar mental health issues but also to their families and friends who often feel powerless to help.
