Shop Front Theatre is where you want to be

Sphere, Shop Front Theatre, City Arcade, Coventry, Nov 7-10

If you've been following the extraordinary stories presented at the Shop Front Theatre in Coventry then you won't want to miss the last group in the series: Sphere.

It's now 25 years since Julia Negus and Chris O'Connell, of Theatre Absolute, established the Shop Front Theatre in City Arcade. They have gone on to win multiple national awards.

Two years ago the couple commissioned several new plus some established artists to add their voices on key issues of the day, all based loosely on a quote from the American essayist Henry David Thoreau who once declared: "We are not where we are, but in a false position..."

Whatever that means.

To be fair, it has meant a lot in the series of short plays already presented within the walls of this former fish 'n' chippy-turned cutting-edge theatre that seats 55.

And Sphere is simply the all encompassing name for the final set of acts in the series which will be seen between November 7 and 10.

Chris said: "Thoreau's original quote: 'We are not where we are,but in a false position.'....seems particularly apt at this moment in the 21st century. It's a provocative call for theatre makers to explore people's experiences today and includes headline issues like politics, economics and migration..."

These are the voices of seven different writers - some you may know, others you will have never heard of. But all have a point to make about where they are today and may well welcome audiences to join in the discussion.

The writers are: Amy Kakoura, Ashley James Brown, Demi Oyediran, Kimisha Lewis, Laura Nyahuye, Ola Animashawun and Raef Boylan.
