Nativity! youngsters revise roles at school

Nativity! The Musical, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, October 23-28.

Coventry actor Andy Brady takes one of the starring roles as the musical version of Debbie Isitt's hugely successful Nativity! franchise returns to the city that inspired it for the start of its new national tour.

Brady will play scheming teacher Gordon Shakespeare alongside Scott Garnham as the exasperated hero Mr Maddens and the ever-present Simon Lipkin as mad Mr Poppy in the second tour for the Birmingham Rep production, co-produced by the Belgrade, that toured across the country last year.

Based on Isitt's 2009 feel-good film, Nativity! The Musical tells the story of a group of children from an ordinary school as they attempt to stage the best nativity play that the world - or at least Coventry - has ever seen. Its cast list of family-friendly songs include Sparkle and Shine, Nazareth and One Night One Moment.

Alongside Brady, up to 14 youngsters from schools in and around Coventry will feature in the Belgrade leg of the tour, playing pupils at his rival Oakmoor School.

Young members of the cast have already visited Holy Family School in Coventry (pictured), the real-life model for Mr Maddens' St Bernadette's, to get a feel for the locations used in the original film.
