Bollywood effect used to punch home a message

October 4, 2018

Dishoom! Rifco Theatre Company, Warwick Arts Centre, Oct 16-20.

The world première production tour of  a new comedy by Gurpreet Kaur Bhattii, takes its title from the old Bollywood sound effect used when someone would land a punch.

Featuring songs from one such film, Sholay, the comedy drama follows Simon and his friends. It's the summer of 78 and the friends should be looking forward to leaving school, but the National Front are on the streets.
Simon's cousin Baljit comes to stay, and introduces him via VHS to the Bollywood classic, Sholay.
Inspired by the film’s dynamic duo, Jai and Veeru, Simon and Baljit find their inner superheroes and set out to change their world forever.
Produced by Rifco Theatre Company, in co-production with Watford Palace Theatre and Oldham Coliseum Theatre, Dishoom! is directed by Rifco's Pravesh Kumar. Seventeen year-old Bilal Khan makes his professional stage debut in the lead role of Simon.
"Gurpreet's funny, heart-warming play shines a spotlight on attitudes to disability in the South Asian community, something we really need to talk about,” explains Pravesh.  I am honoured to be involved with this brilliant piece of new writing.”
The cast includes Elijah Baker (Mark), Seema Bowri (Bibi), Georgia Burnell (Donna), Omar Ibrahi (Dad), Gurkiran Kaur (Baljit) and James Mace (Keith) alongside Bilal Khan (Simon).
This nostalgic, 70’s set production echoes the best of British-Asian film and TV and is well worth catching.
