Warwick Folk Festival, Warwick School campus and venues in Warwick, July 26-29
Mention folk festivals to many people and they immediately think of Morris dancers making merry, or local pubs and restaurants hosting earnest young singer-songwriters hanging their mournful hearts on their sleeves .
This hardly does justice to the large and well-established Warwick Folk Festival, which takes off for its 39th year.
The main site is the place to be: In the recently constructed Warwick Hall, in the grounds of Warwick School, Myton Road, the big name acts perform in concert - artists like leading British roots bands Show Of Hands, Jon Boden and the Remnant Kings, Canadian folk superstars Gordie Mackeeman and his Rhythm Boys, and acclaimed Basque musicians Korrontzi.
Main site tickets will also get you in to the concerts and events in several venues - the Bridge House Theatre, the Living Tradition Centre, the Lecture Theatre and the Sports Hall, where you'll find a packed programme of ceilidhs. Alternatively buy a site-only day ticket for access to the outdoor stages, craft fair, dance displays, children's events - including Professor Panic's Big Top circus - and festival food and bars.
Meanwhile, a lively and free programme o ffestival fringe events takes over the town centre for the weekend. Highlights include open-air folk-rock concerts in Market Place, a performance by the Warwick Folk Festival Choir, a Sunday afternoon "jazz-tour" of venues by celebrated Kenilworth-based dance band Steamchicken, Irish sessions, shanty sessions, informal jam sessions and, yes, lots of dancing - not only Morris but also rapper dancing, step dancing and belly-dancing!
