Drama takes its cue from newspaper legacy

June 20, 2018

Read All About It!, Coventry Telegraph buildings, July 10-14.

The former offices of the Coventry Telegraph take a starring role as two separate shows in their cavernous spaces highlight some real-life stories from the city's, and the newspaper's, past 50 years.

Popping up throughout the building in a journey through the decades are actors from the Belgrade Theatre's nine youth and community groups, presenting City Final, a series of snapshots from all that local history. In total around 80 community performers, directed by group leaders of all nine groups, will be bringing to the show, written by Jennifer Farmer, some new interpretations of the stories that made the news.

In Retold, the second performance piece, Mercurial Dance take over the building's lobby for a cabaret-style show, re-telling in their own way tales from the past. Directed and choreographed by Mercurial Dance principal Oliver Scott, the performance puts professional dancers Lewys Holt, Ashley Jordan and Henry Curtis alongside a supporting cast recruited from Coventry University and other regional universities and colleges. Music is by Coventry singer-songwriter Lucy Anne Sale.

Both shows, which follow one another each evening, are part of Read All About It!, a site-specific performance festival that's part of the Coventry City of Culture Trust's build-up programme towards 2021.
