Goodness gracious moi, French farce goes to Bollywood

April 2, 2018

The Game Of Love And Chai, Belgrade Theatre, April 24-28.

French farce re-imagined with a Bollywood twist by a writer who made his name in the madcap comedy The Young Ones is the intriguing cultural mix that brings The Game Of Love And Chai to the Belgrade stage later this month.

Written by Nigel Planer, the goofy Young One now becoming better known for his prowess with the pen, the play picks up Pierre de Marivaux's 18th century romantic comedy, The Game Of Love And Chance, and gives it a good contemporary Bollywood shake, complete with song and dance, in the hands of acclaimed British Asian theatre company, Tara Arts.

Kamala is eager for her strong-willed daughter Rani to marry the successful, if emotionally retarded, businessman Raj - but that's only the start of the fun as mistaken identity, romance and the unexpected come into play and best-laid plans unravel. Directed by Jatinder Verma and starring Goldy Notay as Kamal, Sharon Singh as Rani and Adam Samuel-Bal as Raj, the play heads to Coventry as part of a six-week national tour.

Nigel Planer said, "I've been hooked on Indian cinema since 1973. I love its range, its daring and its ridiculous sense of fun. So when I came across Marivaux's play - a mistaken identity comedy about the foolish things we do when we fall in love - the connection seemed obvious. With Marivaux, as with so-called Bollywood, the main thing is to completely abandon oneself and let foolishness and love take over."

Jatinder Verma added, "Nigel's new play brilliantly re-imagines Marivaux for today's multicultural audiences, bringing a touch of India to the comic clash of passion and class."
