Shakespeare at the double
Mustardseed's Magical Mayhem, Playbox Carousel Studio Theatre, March 10 and 11 (daytime).
A Midsummers Night's Dream, Playbox Theatre, March 22 to April 7 (selected dates).
Shakespeare's evergreen tale of love, confusion, magic and wonder is given not one but two fresh outings in Warwick-based Playbox Theatre's spring festival this month.
Children under 7 are the target audience for Mustardseed's Magical Mayhem, a popular introduction to Shakespeare's classic that initiates a young audience into the world of Titania and the faeries by getting them to participate in preparations for a very special event in fairyland.
The cast is led by Calum Blackie and performances are at 2.30pm and 4pm on Saturday, March 10, and 11am and 2pm on Sunday, March 11.
In the company's main theatre, Playbox and sibling Shakespeare Young Company present an all-new production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, featuring 19-year-old Alfie Jones as Oberon and 18-year-old Eilidh Evans as Titania, with Hayden Coward, Paige Cooper, Dani Burridge and Sam Bain as the quartet of hapless lovers and Syd Sutherland as Bottom the weaver. Performances are on March 22 (7pm) and March 24 (3pm and 7pm) and on April 6 (7pm) and April 7 (3pm and 7pm).
Director Stewart McGill said, "Possibly the perfect Shakespearean play; written for a wedding and celebrating love, harmony and the power of magic.
"The play has its dark elements and is full of strange magic. Just imagine if the spirits of Elizabethan otherworldings could enter our world through a portal on Midsummer Night - and for a time two dimensions co-exist."
