Master spy writer reveals his secrets
An Evening with George Smiley, Royal Spa Centre cinema, Leamington, 7 September.
For a generation of television viewers, super-spy George Smiley will be forever the short, pudgy and bespectacled figure of Alec Guinness.
But now the novelist John Le Carré is to share some of the real secrets behind the creation of his most famous character.
Broadcast live from London's Royal Festival Hall and for one night only, An Evening With George Smiley includes a rare question and answer session with the master storyteller as he reflects on the continuing story of Smiley, who along with his trusted lieutenant Peter Guillam, is a central character in his latest novel, A Legacy Of Spies.
The event will also feature readings by Le Carré himself from the novel, which is published on the same day and represents another milestone in the career of one of the world's most prolific and best-read writers.
Le Carré's legacy goes all the way back to The Spy Who Came In From The Cold and includes his most recent television outing, The Night Manager, his powerful examination of the arms trade.
Le Carré's fee for the evening, and the producers' share of profits from the show, are being donated to the emergency medical humanitarian aid organisation Medecins sans Frontieres (MSF), a cause close to the novelist's heart.
