May 25, 2017

Footloose: The Musical, Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, June 13-17

The worldwide smash hit Footloose: The Musical bursts on to the stage at the Belgrade Theatre, Coventry, from Tuesday, June 13, to Saturday, June 17.

The musical, starring Pop Idol’s Gareth Gates and former Nolan sister Maureen, comes to the city on the back of a highly successful UK tour last year.

Based on the 1984 film hit with Kevin Bacon, the musical tells the story of city boy Ren, who has to move to a rural backwater in America where dancing is banned. Of course Ren breaks loose and soon has the whole town up on its feet.

The show features classic 80s hits including Holding out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, and the unforgettable title track. With this brand new production, expect bags of youthful spirit, dazzling dance, and electrifying music.

The film was the highest-grossing February release in US film history and the soundtrack album sold more than 17 million copies. Footloose was nominated for a Golden Globe, and both the title song and Let’s Hear It for the Boy received Academy Award nominations.

Gareth Gates (pictured above) rose to fame through the first series of Pop Idol in 2001, and went on to sell more than 5 million records worldwide. His version of Unchained Melody sold over a million copies in the UK to become the third best-selling  single of the Noughties. His stage credits include Les Misérables, Legally Blonde, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.

Maureen Nolan and her sisters were one of Europe’s first girl bands, hugely successful, and best known for their smash hit single I’m in the Mood for Dancing.

On stage, Maureen has played Mrs Johnstone in Blood Brothers in the West End and on tour, to critical acclaim. She was the fourth Nolan sister to play the role which got them into the Guinness Book of Records. Her other credits include Sadie in Girl’s Behind, Jill in Mum’s the Word, and Sarah in The Naked Truth.

The show is directed by Racky Plews (American Idiot, West End) with choreography by Matthew Cole.
